Representative Jim Moran (D-VA) is declaring war against erectile dysfunction ads and is proposing H.R. 2175 to prohibit such commercials from being broadcast on TV and radio between 6AM and 10PM. Declaring ads by Viagra, Levitra, Cialis and many others indecent, Moran claims to have widespread support for such a measure. Moran proposed a similar bill in 2005, but claims that the ads have become more explicit since then and need to be stopped. The prevalence of such commercials is a well founded fact, especially since ED drug manufacturers spent $313.4 million on media ads last year, versus $237.2 million in 2007.

Four examples of the advertising targeted by Moran may be seen below:

Discussion Questions:

1.  Do ED advertisements share common characteristics?  If so, what are those characteristics?

2.  What makes certain ads “indecent”?

3.  Do you agree with Moran’s position?  Why, or why not?
