Many people viewing television programs on sites like hulu.com have been shocked by how many condom advertisements can appear throughout a 60 minute show. Hulu does not hide from controversial advertisements, though, and claims that it is willing to take whatever the main networks deem too risky. Thus, the networks’ Puritanical values means that they are missing out on advertising dollars in a time of an economic slump. The slow acceptance of birth control advertisements is well documented, and the future – especially in a competitive market – is bound to change.

After viewing the sample condom ads below, please consider the following discussion questions.

Discussion Questions:

1.  What is it about many condom advertisements that is so offensive to a general television audience?

2.  What is the target audience for most condom advertisements?

3.  Are the main networks being unreasonable?  Are they losing out on business, or is their decision a calculated one?
