Nevada Senator John Ensign admitted this week that he had an extramarital affair with the wife of a man who attempted to reveal the story to Fox News. Doug Hampton accused Ensign of carrying on an affair with his wife for almost a year, even after he was confronted about the relationship. Though the affair ended in late 2008, Ensign only recently confessed, he says, because Mr. Hampton threatened to blackmail him, and was seeking excessive financial benefits. Ensigns intentions, however, have been questioned, especially by those who wonder why he has not filed a report with the police.

Discussion Questions:

1.  Sen. John Ensign has been criticized for not coming out until now.  Why is timing so important in crisis communication?

2.  Is Ensign still a viable candidate for the 2012 Presidential Election?  If not, why?  If so, what must he do to repair his image with conservative voters?

3.  From what you can tell, was Ensign’s apology sufficient?  If not, what might you change aside from the timing?  If so, why did it work well for some audiences?
