South Carolina governor Mark Sanford penned another major apology this week, appearing in his state’s The State, for maintaining an affair with an Argentinian woman. This time, the governor was perhaps a bit more strategic in that he did not mention his family or much about his lover, who he previously described as his soul-mate. In his newest apology, Sanford admitted “It is true that I did wrong and failed at the largest of levels.” Likening the scandal to his own funeral, Sanford claimed that he learned his lesson and wanted forgiveness: “I apologize…and more than anything would ask for you forgiveness going forward.”

Having apologized unsuccessfully in a press conference and in numerous interviews, Sanford’s latest mea culpa begs the question of whether he can get out of this at all. To determine whether Sanford made the right move and what he should do in the future please watch the following videos:

Discussion Questions:

1.  What was so wrong with Sanford’s first apology that he needed other apologies to further repair his public image?

2.  Will Sanford’s latest remarks help save his political career?  Why, or why not?

3.  If you were advising Sanford, what would you recommend he do in the future regarding how he responds to questions about the scandal?
