Addressing the Rumors: When and how should Al Gore respond to sex gossip? June 24, 2010

The announcement that former VP Al Gore and his wife, Tipper, were separating surprised many. Although the couple called it “a mutual and mutually supportive decision that we have made together following a process of long and careful consideration,” the news has stoked rumors that Gore had somehow been unfaithful. Ever since, rumors have been spreading that Gore had an affair with close friend Laurie David, and that he supposedly sexually assaulted a masseuse back in 2006 after acting like a “sex crazed poodle.”

1. The accusations against Gore beg the following question: At what point should public figures, and even organizations, address rumors about their conduct?

2. Why did the news of Gore’s breakup with his wife trigger so many theories about the split? Could this have been prevented with a clearer public statement about the separation?
