Crisis 101: Is there any help for Mel Gibson? July 16, 2010

It probably couldn’t get any worse for Mel Gibson. Following a highly public incident in which he went on a sexist and racist tirade toward a Jewish female officer who pulled him over for a DUI back in 2006, his ex-girlfriend has released several phone recordings of the star being verbally abusive. In the first tape released, Mel called his ex a “whore” for dressing provocatively, and uses the N-word when telling her he hopes she gets raped. In a second recording, Gibson appears to admit to punching his ex-girlfriend in the face as she held his infant daughter, telling her “you deserved it” when she complains about the incident. Gibson has already been released by his agent, and the fact that he has two movies coming out in addition to several other investments makes this episode especially devastating.

To hear the first tape yourself, see the following video:

Discussion Questions:

1.  Could the tapes of Gibson’s tirades kill his career? Why, or why not?

2.  If you were representing Gibson on his PR team, how would you attempt to repair his image in the immediate future?

3.  What lessons does this case study have to offer others in regards to public relations and the digital age?
