Finding himself in rough economic times, in two wars far from completion, and embroiled in controversy following the unfortunate forced resignation of Shirley Sherrod, President Obama appeared on “The View” at the end of July to repair his image. It was the first time that a sitting president appeared on a daytime talk show. For the most part, Obama addressed the Sherrod episode, major events in pop culture, and even his waning use of his Blackberry. Obama was criticized by some on the right who chastised him for “playing a celebrity” instead of “being president,” but it was clear that the President’s effort to reach out to those who might be losing hope in his leadership was a wise move.

Discussion Questions:

1.  If the president wanted to improve his image, why did he specifically choose to appear on a daytime talk show? What is it about the audiences of daytime TV that could help him gain popularity?

2.  What did Obama risk by appearing on The View?

3.  Did Obama succeed? Why, or why not?
