China bashing in the United States seemed to reach an all time high in the 2010 midterm election. Acknowledging that the country has a controversial reputation in the US, the Chinese government has announced a major PR campaign ahead of President Hu Jintao’s visit to America. Numerous TV advertisements have been purchased, and will feature prominent Chinese individuals including basketball player Yao Ming, actor Jackie Chan, and multi-billionaire Li Ka-Shing, among many others.

Will the PR campaign be effective in softening China’s image in the United States? Many PR experts are skeptical, claiming that anti-Chinese sentiment runs deep in America and that the ads could be seen as more propaganda from the Communist nation. Discussion Questions:

1.  Why do some Americans have a negative perception of China?

2.  What image must the Chinese government’s ads create to combat its negative image in the United States?

3.  Will the ads be effective? Why, or why not?
