Walmart has been blocked from opening stores in New York City for quite some time, and has finally launches a serious effort to win the hearts and minds of New Yorkers. Walmart’s new PR campaign is using ads of 14 city radio stations, a major print ad in 30 community newspapers, and direct mail to persuade New York neighborhoods that Walmart stores have a lot to offer the community. Those who see the ads are asked to visit WalmartNYC.com to join a community of supporters.

Many PR insiders agree that New York has been unfair to Walmart. Many communities have already welcomed Costco, Home Depot, and Target. Additionally, Walmart’s low prices are good for consumers, and the company’s pay isn’t as low as some of its rivals. Nevertheless, the company faces a major barrier, insiders say, in that it must remain humble and demonstrate its advantages rather than being pushy with decision-makers.

Discussion Questions:

1.  Why are neighborhoods so skeptical of welcoming Walmart?

2.  What arguments should Walmart make in its PR campaign to address that skepticism?

3.  Will NYC open a chain of Walmart stores in the near future? Why, or why not?
