A New York-based gay rights advocacy group achieved a major victory at the beginning of 2011 after receiving the support of Barbara Bush, daughter of George W. Bush. Bush, 29, appeared in a brief commercial claiming, “I’m a New Yorker for marriage equality.” She joined many other notable public figures speaking on behalf of the cause, but she especially helped close the generational and party divide on the issue.

Discussion Question:

1.  Why was Barbara Bush an especially persuasive advocate for gay rights?

2.  Was her commercial persuasive, or were there serious shortcomings in her advocacy?

3.  What else could Barbara Bush have done or said to make her appearance more appealing?
