NFL quarterback Michael Vick, who is still rebounding from being convicted and sentenced for torturing dogs years ago, suddenly announced that he would not appear on the Oprah Winfrey Show after agreeing to do so. The NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year announced that he respected the show, but had to postpone his appearance.

Many sports commentators and PR experts have praised the move, arguing that Vick had nothing to gain from the interview and everything to lose. Since cleaning up his image with a solid performance with the Philadelphia Eagles and a tendency to constantly repent for his sins, Vick would have been forced to rehash painful memories on the show and potentially disgust the public with gruesome details of his dog-fighting days. In the end, many contended, Vick would benefit the most by letting his actions speak louder than his words.

For more on Vick’s decision to spurn Oprah, see the following discussion from ESPN:

Discussion Questions:

1.  Why do you think that Michael Vick originally decided to appear on Oprah? What did he stand to gain?

2.  Do you agree that the appearance would have been harmful to Vick’s public image? Why, or why not?

3.  Is there a time that Michael Vick could appear on Oprah and discuss his crimes without damaging his image, or were his sins so severe that he should simply stay quiet?
