Republican Newt Gingrich, who is clearly seeking his party’s nomination in the 2012 presidential election, has been frequently attacked for infidelity throughout his life. Making matters worse is the fact that he left one of his ex-wives while she was recovering from cancer. Although Gingrich had tried for most of his career to dodge questions about his previous mistakes, he decided to open up recently in an interview with the Christian Broadcast Network. However, Gingrich’s latest response has done little to repair his image. The line from his interview getting the most attention is his claim that he cheated throughout his life because he loved his country too much:

“There’s no question at times of my life, partially driven by how passionately I felt about this country, that I worked far too hard and things happened in my life that were not appropriate.”

To see more on how Gingrich’s response has been reviewed, see the following clip:

Discussion Questions:

1.  Why has Gingrich’s past behavior led to him being called a hypocrite?

2.  Why is Gingrich opening up about his past now? Would his response be effective with his target audience of Republican voters?

3.  If you were coaching Gingrich, how might you suggest that he respond more effectively to concerns about his past sex life?
