President Obama launched his reelection bid at the beginning of April 2011 with a video announcement. Knowing that he must reignite a grassroots movement, Obama’s team created a video depicting “real people” speaking about the importance of him winning. While the president was nowhere to be seen in the announcement, “real people” from critical swing states praised his accomplishments and stressed the need to stay united to allow him to accomplish his ambitious goals. The video was released online, and preceded a number of the president’s engagements on other social media sites designed to kick off the campaign.

Discussion Questions:

1.  How was Obama’s absence from his announcement video important for the overall message he was trying to send to supporters?

2.  Why did Obama use the internet to launch his campaign? How was that, too, important for the overall theme of his campaign?

3.  Watch the video for the demographics represented by Obama’s supporters. Why do you think these specific people chosen for the announcement?
