A new TV program called My Yard Goes Disney features homeowners getting backyard makeovers inspired by Disney parks and movies. While the transformation might be a dream come true for many Americans, media critics are noting that the format is basically transforming television programming into one giant ad. As NPR’s Linda Holmes noted, this is not an entirely new phenomenon. Product placement has been around for decades, and many other shows have been built around products. But My Yard Goes Disney is symbolizing a trend in programming that does not allow viewers to escape advertising since it has become the program itself.

Discussion Questions:

1.  Is the concept of building a show around a brand unique to My Yard Goes Disney? If not, how has it been done before?

2.  What are some concerns about television shows being used to pitch brands?

3.  Is this practice unethical? Why, or why not?
