An ad for potato chip brand Popchips starring Ashton Kutcher has offended Indian-Americans. Kutcher, in an ad featuring several “contestants” for a dating show, imitated a Bollywood producer with an Indian accent and brown make-up. His depiction was slammed as perpetuating negative Indian stereotypes. The ad was eventually taken off the air, along with an apology being posted on the Popchips website.

Discussion Questions:

1.  How was Kutcher’s imitation of the Bollywood producer a caricature – based on negative stereotypes – of Indians?

2.  Was the ad offensive? Did it deserve to be yanked? Why, or why not?
