For being one of the best basketball players since Michael Jordan, LeBron James has had difficulty gaining respect, and most recent reports suggest that his new found success will do little to change minds. Since declaring that he would leave Cleveland for Miami, during a one hour television special nonetheless, James has been one of the most disliked players in basketball. According to Darren Rovell of CNBC.com, most LeBron haters reported that his winning the NBA championship would do nothing to change their opinion of him. As Henry Shafer of Marketing Evaluations explained, “Winning helps, but you have to be perceived in a way that you’ve convinced people you’re different than what caused the perception to happen and that’s the hurdle that he is challenged with.”

If Lebron James is bothered by any of this, he does not show it. During the NBA finals, he claimed rather forcefully, “We want to make enough plays to win basketball games, not to answer any questions about what people have to say about us.”

Discussion Questions:

1.  Why was LeBron James hurt by the way he made his “decision” a few years ago?

2.  Will LeBron’s success in Miami eventually soften his critics? Why, or why not?

3.  Can James ever be as adored as Michael Jordan? What more will LeBron James need to do to improve his image?
