Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has refused to release tax records before 2010. The move violates a long-standing tradition in the presidential contest, and has given Democrats a new attack strategy. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, announced in August that he heard from a reliable source that Romney hadn’t paid taxes for 10 years. While the GOP didn’t want to respond to the rumors, they quickly attacked Reid. Since Romney’s 2010 tax returns showed that he paid lower income taxes than the average middle class family, the potential scandal has legs.

The Obama campaign is putting so much hope into the new attack, that it released a new 30-second ad called “Son of Boss” to try to tie Romney to a famous tax evasion scandal from the 1990s.

Discussion Questions:

1.  Why might Romney be blocking the release of his tax returns? Why are Romney’s tax returns so controversial?

2.  What does it mean to “beg the question”? How are Democrats using the strategy to attack Romney?

3.  Will Romney be forced to release his returns? Why, or why not?
