Twitter causes entertainment insiders, especially agents, to incessantly worry about the next high-profile gaffe from a big star. However, within the porn industry, Twitter is being fully embraced to make stars go mainstream. As Dan Miller, managing editor of an adult industry trade publication, told CNN, “Twitter has opened up these porn stars fan bases like nothing the adult film industry has ever seen before. Since most mainstream pop culture publications don’t cover the porn industry (and) porn movie reviews don’t generally appear alongside reviews of big Hollywood movies … the adult industry has embraced Twitter as a way to reach out directly to fans beyond the typical porn consumer.”

By some estimates, the overwhelming majority of adult film performers are now on Twitter to create their own brand. According to the stars who’ve built successful Twitter accounts, the best kinds of things to share are parts of their non-professional life that reveal their personality to their fans.

Discussion Questions:

1.  What are the alleged harms of pornography?

2.  Should we be worried about porn stars going mainstream?

3.  Should porn stars be able to accept Twitter followers who are under the age of 18? Why, or why not?
