U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY), hero to Libertarians across the country, indicated in November 2012 that he may run for president in 2016. In an interview with ABC News, Paul stated, “I’m not going to deny that I’m interested. I am different than some in that I’m not going to deny that I’m interested. I’m not going to deny that I think we have to go a different direction because we’re not winning.” Expressing how he thinks the GOP needs to change, Paul continued, “I think we have to go a different direction because we’re just not winning and we have to think about some different ideas. States should be allowed to make a lot of these decisions. I want things to be decided more at a local basis, with more compassion. I think it would make us as Republicans different.”

Paul’s announcement, however, shouldn’t be that surprising. More than 15 prominent Republicans are privately considering running for president in 2016, including Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA), and former vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan (R-WI). While some might say the decision is premature, such consideration is being encouraged by the national party. According to one analyst, “Republican officials are encouraging the never-ending presidential campaign in hopes of creating influential national voices beyond Fox News and Rush Limbaugh.”

Discussion Questions:

1.  Is it ever too early to run for president? Why, or why not?

2.  What are the risks of declaring one’s candidacy so early? What are the benefits?

3.  Who might be the most exciting candidates to run in 2016? Is it too early to tell?

I guess it’s not too early if you are playing a long game and have the money to do it. Personally I think Christie has the TVQ, but I’m no kind of expert.
