Nike announced in January 2013 that it was signing a sponsorship deal with top golfer Rory McIlroy worth $200 million over 10 years. McIlroy joins Tiger Woods as Nike’s faces for golf. McIlroy will be required from here on out to use Nike equipment, including some clubs and balls, something that he says he isn’t worried about. McIlroy noted, “I feel like I’ve transitioned seamlessly from one thing to another. I’m really comfortable with all of the clubs. I’m getting more distance out of the driver and the ball. I’m comfortable with the irons, everything has fallen into place. I’m excited to put the clubs in play.”

McIlroy will also appear with Tiger Woods in a number of advertisements. To see the first ad, watch the following clip:

Discussion Questions:

1.  What are the risks for a company signing a major celebrity to endorse a product or product line?

2.  How could such a lucrative endorsement influence McIlroy’s career?

3.  Could Tiger Woods benefit from Nike’s signing someone else?
